wedNEWSday: TBirds NC proudly support #DevonGirlsCan

After a week off (not pointing any fingers but someone was on leave and obviously didn’t realise netball never stops – sorry!) we are back with another great wedNEWSday story. This week we look at TBirds NC who, alongside all of their other great netballing work, are supporting Sport England’s and Active Devon’s #DevonGirlsCan campaign.

For more exciting, inspirational and interesting netball stories from across the South West make sure you check back every wedNEWSday!

Devon based TBirds Netball Club is proud to officially support #DevonGirlsCan across the county

Recently Sport England has relaunched its hugely successful ‘This Girl Can’ Campaign with the aim of being a bit bolder, as it tries to encourage all women to take up exercise whether they are 14 or 65 years old.

Teignmouth Thunderbirds (TBirds) Netball Club is delighted to work with Sport England and Active Devon for Devon Girls Can. Collectively they’re promoting their open training sessions to encourage more women and girls to get active. The award-winning club is supporting the campaign by offering new participants the opportunity to come back to netball for free at their first session. The community grass roots club has over 50 affiliated players and is keen to continue to encourage more women back to netball.

Angela Rimmer, Founder and Head Coach of TBirds, comments:

“Devon Girls Can is a great way to celebrate TBirds second birthday. The amazing initiative is all about women sharing their experiences to inspire other women to get involved in better wellbeing, without fear of judgement. This is where TBirds came from and is at the very heart of our club ethos.”

We are a constituted not-for-profit sports club and so we rely on fantastic relationships with England Netball and Active Devon staff to enable us to carry on providing access to a fun sport within our local community. The TBirds club ethos is to have fun, meet friends, get fit and play netball.”

Wiltshire Walking Netball Pink Week

The newest part of the netball community in Wiltshire, the wonderful Walking Netballers, have fully embraced Net 10 For Life this year and have led the way in raising nearly £200 for Cancer Research UK during their very own “Pink Week”.

The ladies who play across 4 sessions (Tidworth, Salisbury, Trowbridge & Melksham) all donned pink clothing to play in and raised money through various activities in their sessions – including baking cakes and donating 10p per goal scored during games of ‘Killer’. Special mention goes to Sue from Melksham who got her friends and family to sponsor her to wear a tutu during her session -we think she looked fab!

Huge thanks to all the ladies involved and to the Walking Netball hosts and Becca Higgs from Wiltshire Council for coordinating the fundraising efforts!

St Agnes Junior Netball Club’s sponsored silence

St Agnes Junior Netball Club (Cornwall) participated in a sponsored silence for Comic Relief last month and raised an incredible £798.77.

The girls (U14 and U12) were not allowed to speak from the moment they walked into the sports hall to the moment they left – a whole hour and a half! In that time they trained then played a game, whereby only the coaches and umpires were allowed to speak.

One of the club’s real chatterboxes actually commented how enjoyable it was not to speak and all the coaches enjoyed not going home with a headache, for once!

Well done to all at St Agnes.
