Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles.

Less than six months ago, a small group of walking netball enthusiasts found themselves without access to their usual midweek playing slot. Today, thanks to the energy of qualified host Jackie Brooks and her team, and help from a local facility, Rebels Walking Netball have a permanent home, growing numbers, and are about to enter their first tournament.

Newly affiliated to England Netball, assisted by Samantha Kemmish (Somerset Netball Development Officer), they are keen to recruit new players. With ages ranging from 20 to 76, the group based at LED Westland Leisure Centre in Yeovil play from 1 to 2 pm every Thursday with a get together for tea (and biscuits) afterwards.

Participants, who include at least one male, come from all walks of life, and share huge enjoyment for this less taxing form of the game they may not have played since school days. As the group has already proved, walking netball not only boosts physical fitness but sharpens up the senses, reflexes and coordination, engages the brain, engenders team spirit and is a great way of making new friends. Cost is £4 per session. For more information check out our Facebook page or contact Samantha.kemmish@englandnetball.co.uk or LED Westland Leisure Centre, Yeovil, BA20 2DD (01935 314652).
