Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles.
Hucclecote Netball Club (HNC) Premier Squad have worked hard over the last 3 seasons to develop a squad that would eventually gain a place back in National Premier 1. The squad is a mix of experience along with up and coming youngsters who have worked their way through the club from our junior section.
At the start of the season they welcomed back to the club Eleanor Roberts and Paige Reed and newcomers Clare Jones, Chloe Cubello and Anna Lebe to HNC.
As a club they have developed strong links with Welsh Netball and Severn Stars which has really added depth to the squad. The 2018/19 12 player squad were versatile and offered options in all areas of the court which allowed them to counteract many styles of play that were faced.
Sam Cook was once again captain and provided leadership on court as well as some impressive interceptions. Her ability to bring out the best in the players around her was also key to a successful season. At the other end of court and co-captain, Rosie Allison displayed a shooting masterclass in every game hitting 100% in the final game.
The season started well with an undefeated run taking us into the Christmas break. They were challenged along the way with a close game against Essex Open who pushed all the way to a tight 3 goal win. After Christmas HNC remained focused on chasing down the league title. However, new challenges faced the team with the start of the Superleague season. With restrictions and key players unavailable for some games the remaining players really stepped up and proved that the squad had strength and depth.
For some games we had players out of position but each and every one put out performances that kept their campaign on track. The players supported each throughout the season and this was evident when they were 11 goals down against Clan in round 16. Not only did the 7 players on court pull the game back, the bench also played a key role in supporting during those tense final minutes.
The season saw Hucclecote unbeaten & gain promotion to Premier League Div 1.
The 2018/19 squad were:
Rosie Allison, Paige Reed, Eleanor Roberts, Beth Gabriel, Shona O’Dwyer, Anna Lebe, Lauren Hancock, Sarah Adams, Clare Jones, Lydia Jones, Ella Powell-Davis, Chloe Cubello and Sam Cook.
The Club are now looking forward to new challenges in Premier 1 next season. Pre-Season will start towards the end of July and continue until the start of the season.
