Eleven teams from across the region and an invitation team from South Glamorgan, came together on Sunday 13th September in the Sports Training Village at the University of Bath to challenge for the first competition of the season.
Although billed as a friendly tournament, the level of play was intense with the teams using the four quarter format to rotate squads and try out different player combinations. Hucclecote, unbeaten in Group A, were unable to sustain their winning ways, losing to Exeter, runners-up in Group B in one of the semi-finals. The other semi-final saw Group A runners-up, Premier Romans beat the invitation team, CTK who had won their group on goal average.
With both teams now playing their seventh game of the day, Premier Romans eventually triumphed 13 goals to 7 over Exeter in the final.
The tournament was also used to provide mentoring to umpires, especially those wishing to advance to the next officiating award. Danny Neill, Netball South West’s Officiating Manager, was pleased with the event, “It is vital that umpires are able to access this level of competition if they want to progress. We have a great group of mentors, themselves experienced “A” Award umpires, and we are grateful to them for giving up their time to help those coming up the officiating ladder”.
