After all the events of late, this weeks wedNEWSday takes a look at the story of a player, coach, volunteer and above all a netball nutter. Devon based Irene Mellor is a self confessed Netball Nutter!
Irene Mellor has played netball since school. She moved to Devon in 1994 and joined Kingsbridge NC a year later as one of the founder members. The club quickly decided to join the PDNL League to get some match play experience and after numerous successful seasons, they reached Premier B. By that time, Irene had qualified as a level 2 coach and, in addition to playing, coached both Stokenham Primary School and Kingsbridge Community College.
Irene stopped playing for a while due to work commitments but after a job change in 2012 and England Netball launching their flagship product Back to Netball, she just knew she had to get involved. …And that’s where Quayside B2N club started! Four years on, it’s still going strong with an age range of 16 to 58 and three well attended socials a year. Quayside B2N train every Tuesday and enter on average two Back to Netball tournaments a year – the last two tournaments they’ve had to take two teams!
Coaching aside, Back to Netball has been fantastic for Irene personally. At the age of 54 she never thought she would play again. When she first went back Irene was very wary as she had gained weight and had to strap both ankles but after a few sessions her confidence was back. Quayside NC are a fantastic bunch of ladies to not only coach but to play with too, and laughs are always plentiful. They give each other inspiration and confidence whilst having a lot of fun along the way. Recently they have sourced some funding from England Netball for some balls and bibs, plus gained sponsorship from Toad Hall Cottages.
Thank you to Irene for all she has given to netball over the years.
