Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles.

Over lockdown, two members of the Netball South West Regional Management Board, Education and Training Lead Sarah & Youth Lead Issy met virtually to discuss the option of rolling out a Youth Officiating Taster session around the region.

They brainstormed the idea to engage and encourage more young people (U18s) to learn the rules of netball and get a better understanding of Officiating. This started by launching a couple of taster sessions, targeting clubs in Somerset and Gloucestershire with a range of different age groups to gain a clearer insight of how to deliver and tailor the session.

During the session they have taken a personalised approach using Q&A, pictures, diagrams, and demonstrations.  The overall feedback so far has been brilliant, the girls have been really engaged, enthusiastic and are wanting to participate. All learners earn a certificate for their participation on the course and receive supporting resources to help players continue their officiating journey after the course, having the tools to aid them if wanting to attend future England Netball Officiating courses.

The aim for Sarah and Issy is to role this to all the counties in the South West and deliver this forum for them, to provide them with a better understanding and give the young players a different perspective of the game. They will be in contact with counties directly about this.
