On Saturday 25th February, Netball South West hosted its first Game Conference in over 6 years, at Wellington School in Somerset.
Coaches and Officials from across the South West attended a jam packed day of coaching, officiating and wellbeing sessions led by some of the industry’s top professionals.
Claire Carter from BBC Somerset hosted the event, and Baz Moffat from The Well HQ was the keynote speaker.
Throughout the day delegates got the opportunity to take their game to the next level with a mix of practical and theory sessions including Game Centered Approach by Kat Ratnapala, Goal Setting with Jane Lomax, Contact v Contest led by James Thomas, Progressive Practices with Denise Ellis and V.P.T Essentials led by Gary Holden.
“I loved having the opportunity to gain knowledge from a wide variety of coaches and other professionals. I loved the practical sessions and found them really valuable.”
In addition to her keynote speech Baz Moffat led a session on pelvic floor and how to support women and girls to be active throughout all life stages. Baz explained how the pelvic floor works, red flags and how to correctly do pelvic floor exercises and how often these should be done. Yes, everyday was the answer! Baz also highlighted the value of having open discussions about the pelvic floor and the various issues that can arise such as bladder leakage.
Kat Ratnapala and Jane Lomax joined forces in the afternoon and delivered a practical session exploring how player goal setting and mindset can influence performance on court, and how to train for pressured situations.
Courtney Lewis who is currently Team Bath’s Physio, delivered a session on Injury Prevention, highlighting the impact of the menstrual cycle on training and performance and how it links to injury.
“The opportunity to update my knowledge of coaching skills alongside other coaches & learning about health issues.”
During the afternoon, officials looked at the umpire’s toolbox for managing the game with Bernadette Palmer and explored what to do when umpires are exposed to a situation that is not covered within the rules.
“I liked the classroom and practical elements, it helps solidify what you’ve learnt. Also the quality of speakers was really good!”
The day concluded with a Q&A featuring Kat Ratnapala, James Thomas, Jane Lomax and Bernadette Palmer with special guest Serena Kersten (MBE) joining us live from Jersey.
Karen Jones, Netball South West Chair, said “I was so pleased that the team was able to deliver such a fantastic event as part of our member give back offer.
