Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles.
Not one, not two but three South West Regional league play-offs were held on Coronation Weekend!
First on Saturday at the University of Gloucestershire Arena was the play-off match between Babylon of Division 2 against Premier Romans B from Division 3 North. Romans stormed to an early 14-7 lead at the end of q1, and Babylon were unable to pull back the deficit, eventually losing 37-54. The teams now swap places and Premier Romans B will play in division 2 next season.
At the same time on the other two courts the top four county teams from the north of the region were vying for positions in Division 3 North next season; Challengers Flyers from Gloucestershire, Mavericks 2 from Avon, a young Team Jets 2 team from Jersey, and completely new to this level of competition, Burmah from Wiltshire.
Each team played each other once in shortened form matches of four 8 minutes quarters. Because no team won their first two matches, the outcome was not certain until the final round of matches where Challengers beat Burmah 31-23 to win the tournament and Mavericks then held off Team Jets by 29-19, to finish as runners-up. Both Challengers and Mavericks secured their places in Division 3 North next season.
Heading on down to Plymouth Marjon University on Sunday with the same format of play-off matches for entry into Division 3 South. TTNC Zephyr were competing to retain their place in the division against the top county teams from the south of the region; Titans Thunder from East Devon, and two teams again both new to the competition - Plymouth Firebirds from West Devon and Penzance from Cornwall.
All the matches were closely contested with Penzance only losing their first match 23-24 to TTNC Zephyr. As per the day before, the outcome was decided on the results of the last round. Titans Thunder and TTNC Zephyr won their matches to finish first and second respectively and both these teams will be represented in Division 3 South next season.
Thanks go to all the volunteers, umpires and the mentors who helped these events run smoothly.
