Each week we bring you a good news story from across the South West as part of our wedNEWSday articles.
Keeping women in sport and providing competitive opportunities at all ages is a challenge. As women get older the way they play netball does change with some opting for social netball or walking netball and enjoying the exercise and wellbeing benefits amongst friends. Whilst others continue to play in local leagues in teams with a mixture of ages where experience often wins over young legs. There is nothing quite like playing in the same team as your daughters and even granddaughters. However, Netball Dorset felt that a netball festival specifically for the over 40 age group would be an opportunity for friends to get together and play in a competitive environment at a slightly (I mean only slightly) slower pace.
On the 18th February 2023, Dorset’s Netball Development Officer (NDO) and Netball Dorset organised a ‘Vets’ Festival at Canford School. What an afternoon it turned out to be with so much laughter on and off the court. There was plenty of serious competition too between the 8 teams. The winners, Bournemouth, took the top place ahead of Hot Nanas, on a goal difference of only 2 goals. Prizes were kindly donated by Asda, Tesco, England Netball, Netball South West and Netball Dorset. The average age of the players in the tournament, across all the teams, was 55 with the team that came second having an average age above 60! Having a fabulous indoor venue with 2 courts and plenty of space for teams to have base camps meant that this event was weather proof and very social. Although open to non England Netball members, over 90% were members but the majority of players had not played together as a Vets team before. This certainly opens up the possibility of looking at more Vets netball events in Dorset. The feedback was really positive and it looks like the NDO will be organising another one next year!!
